How to Apply | Support the Scholarship Fund

The Jan and Carl Goddard Scholarship Fund is an exciting new effort to expand access to learner-centered Montessori education in East Tennessee by providingneed-based  scholarships to students at KMS.

The fund honors Jan Goddard, who served as Operations Director of KMS from 1993 to 2009. Jan worked tirelessly to make KMS a diverse, supportive community, and the Fund extends her vision by enabling the school to share the benefits of Montessori education with a wider cross-section of East Tennessee students and  their families.

The goals of The Jan and Carl Goddard Scholarship Fund are:

  1. To help children who would benefit from Montessori education attend KMS regardless of their family's financial situation.
  2. To help KMS remain a diverse, welcoming community for students and families from all backgrounds and walks of life.

Scholarships will be granted annually, based on financial need. They can cover up to 50% of tuition.

At least one scholarship each year will be allocated to a student of color. Over time, we will work to ensure that the number of scholarships given to students of color is proportionate to their representation in the population of East Tennessee.

One scholarship will be named the Kathleen Ambrose Science Scholarship in honor of Kathleen Ambrose, who retired from KMS in 2008. It will be given to a student who has demonstrated a strong interest in science. Other named scholarships may be established as well.

How to Apply

[Note: Your child must be accepted to KMS before you apply  for a scholarship. You can start the application process here.]

Scholarship applications are processed by School and Student Services (SSS), a program of the National Association of Independent Schools. SSS analyzes each application and sends us a summary of each family's financial situation and an estimate of how much they can pay toward tuition. Final decisions about scholarship awards will be made by a committee made up of the Operations Director and the Community Members of the KMS Board.

Families can apply to the scholarship fund any time up to the start of school in mid-August. When you apply, please notify KMS by calling 865-525-6042 or e-mailing  kms (at) knoxvillemontessori.org. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis as applications are received. Families that receive scholarships will not be eligible for the sibling or prepayment discount.
