Education at KMS is based on the principles developed by Maria Montessori and extended and refined by Montessori teachers in America and around the world. At the heart of this approach is the belief that children will best reach their potential by having the freedom to learn in a classroom especially prepared for exploring under the careful guidance of a trained teacher.

The benefits of a Montessori education include the following.

  • Provides individual instruction: Each student is allowed supervised free choice of classroom activities and freedom of movement based on his or her interests, so long as these activities do not disturb others.
  • Teaches responsibility and self-discipline: Students direct their own learning in a supportive, carefully prepared environment scaled to the needs of the child.
  • Promotes initiative and self-confidence: Lessons are structured and presented to enable self-teaching and independent activity, which develops self-reliance.
  • Encourages teamwork: In the elementary classroom, students often study together in small groups, strengthening their interpersonal skills and their ability to work in teams.
  • Develops leadership: Multi-age classrooms encourage students to learn from and teach each other, fostering leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Teaches care for the environment: Students learn to respect and care for the environment by helping to care for their own classrooms and through developmentally appropriate science lessons and outdoor activities.
